Northern Drakensberg

The Northern Drakensberg is the grand northern gateway to the greater Maloti-Drakensberg region, stretching from Clarens and Golden Gate to Cathedral Peak, and it's a landscape defined by contrast: golden sandstone cliffs, basalt escarpments, rivers born on the high plateau, and ancient San rock shelters that preserve thousands of years of history. The journey starts in Clarens, a mountain village known for art and hospitality, then moves through Golden Gate Highlands National Park and on to QwaQwa and Witsieshoek, where Basotho culture and high altitude adventure define the region's identity. At its heart is the Amphitheatre, a massive basalt wall towering above Royal Natal National Park, with Tugela Falls descending from the escarpment and feeding one of KwaZulu-Natal's major river systems, explorable from below via Tugela Gorge and the Mahai Valley or from above via the Sentinel route. Further south, Bergville and the Upper Thukela Valley connect the mountains to the foothill communities, before the region reaches Cathedral Peak and Didima, where sharp peaks, forests, waterfalls, and San rock art come together. In short, the Northern Drakensberg isn't a single attraction but a full journey through mountains, people, geology, and history, bold, ancient, and culturally alive from Clarens to Cathedral Peak.

Central Drakensberg

Cathedral Peak rises to 3,004 m at the heart of the Central Berg, surrounded by the richest concentration of San rock art in the world. Giants Castle Game Reserve protects bearded vultures and herds of eland against a backdrop of jagged peaks.

Southern Drakensberg

The Sani Pass climbs 1,332 m in 9 km through a series of hairpin bends carved into the escarpment, crossing into the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho at 2,873 m. The Mkhomazi Wilderness Area below is one of the least visited and most pristine parts of the berg.
