Witsieshoek Mountain Resort to Sentinel Car Park The adventure begins at Witsieshoek Mountain Resort, where most operators conduct guest check-in before transferring hikers by 4×4 vehicle to Sentinel Car Park, the trailhead for the hike. The approximately 7 km mountain road offers spectacular views across both the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, providing an impressive introduction to the northern Drakensberg. Sentinel Car Park to the Viewpoint The hike starts with the well-known Zig Zags, a steady ascent that gains elevation towards the Sentinel massif. Along the route, a short detour leads to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Eastern Buttress, Devil’s Tooth, the Inner Tower and the surrounding escarpment before continuing to the base of Sentinel’s northern cliffs. The Chain Ladders The Chain Ladders provide one of the most iconic sections of the hike, allowing hikers to ascend approximately 20 metres onto the Drakensberg escarpment. An alternative gully route is available for those who prefer to avoid the ladders, although the chain ladders remain one of South Africa’s most memorable mountain experiences. A packed lunch is typically enjoyed before or after the ascent while overlooking the Namahadi Valley and the dramatic Maloti mountain landscape. Thukela Falls After reaching the escarpment, the trail continues across the alpine plateau to Thukela Falls, recognised as one of the world’s tallest waterfalls with a total drop of approximately 983 metres. Depending on the selected package, hikers may have time to explore the area, relax beside the river, photograph the falls, or simply enjoy the expansive mountain scenery. For overnight itineraries, camping is typically established near the escarpment, offering an unforgettable opportunity to experience sunset, dinner under the stars, and a night surrounded by the tranquillity of the Drakensberg wilderness.

An early morning offers the opportunity to experience sunrise over the Drakensberg escarpment and enjoy breakfast in one of Southern Africa’s most spectacular mountain settings. The return journey follows the same route back across the plateau, descending via the Chain Ladders or the alternative gully before continuing down the Zig Zags to Sentinel Car Park. After arriving at the trailhead, a 4×4 transfer typically returns hikers to Witsieshoek Mountain Resort, marking the conclusion of the Thukela Falls experience.
