Golden Gate Highlands National Park protects rolling montane grasslands, deeply weathered sandstone formations, valleys and high plateaus near Clarens. The park is recognised for the golden light reflected from its sandstone cliffs, especially around Brandwag Buttress. Visitors can explore scenic drives, hiking trails, caves, cultural heritage, wildlife-viewing areas and the Basotho Cultural Village. The park supports species such as eland, black wildebeest, blesbok, mountain reedbuck, grey rhebok, zebra, bearded vultures, Cape vultures and southern bald ibis. It provides a natural northern gateway into the wider Maloti-Drakensberg tourism region.

Permits & Fees
Daily SANParks conservation fees apply. For the 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026 tariff period, published adult fees are R73 for South African residents, R149 for SADC nationals and R325 for international visitors. Accommodation and guided activities are charged separately.
