Clarens is a picturesque mountain town in the Eastern Free State, set beneath the sandstone cliffs and rolling foothills of the Maloti Mountains. Often called the “Jewel of the Eastern Free State,” the town combines dramatic mountain scenery, art, food, adventure and a relaxed village atmosphere, making it one of South Africa’s best-loved weekend destinations. Founded in 1912, Clarens developed into a distinctive creative town known for its galleries, studios, craft shops and restaurants. Today, visitors can spend the morning exploring mountain trails, the afternoon browsing art galleries around the village square, and the evening enjoying local food, wine or craft beer beneath the sandstone mountains. The town is particularly appealing because nature begins almost immediately beyond its streets. Walking and hiking trails climb through the surrounding sandstone landscape, while mountain biking, horse riding, abseiling, fly-fishing and 4×4 adventures provide more energetic ways to explore the region. Just outside Clarens lies Golden Gate Highlands National Park, one of the region’s most striking protected landscapes. Its enormous golden and ochre sandstone formations, open grasslands and high-altitude scenery form a natural transition between the Eastern Free State and the greater Maloti–Drakensberg mountain system. For travellers exploring the Drakensberg from north to south, Clarens works naturally as a northern gateway into a much larger mountain journey. Clarens changes character beautifully through the seasons.
