Qwaqwa-Phuthaditjaba

Phuthaditjhaba lies in the dramatic mountain landscape of QwaQwa in the eastern Free State, where enormous sandstone formations and the Maloti foothills rise almost directly behind communities and villages. For visitors travelling between Clarens, Golden Gate and the Northern Drakensberg, the area introduces a distinctly different side of the mountain region — one shaped as much by Basotho culture and everyday life as by the landscape itself. The town serves as the principal urban centre of QwaQwa and sits close to some of the most striking scenery in the eastern Free State. From here, travellers are within reach of Golden Gate Highlands National Park, the Basotho Cultural Village, Sentinel and the Amphitheatre region, making Phuthaditjhaba an important connection between the Free State highlands and the greater Maloti–Drakensberg. What makes QwaQwa particularly compelling is that the mountains are not simply scenery in the distance. They form part of the identity of the communities beneath them. Traditional Basotho influences, rural settlements, livestock, craft and mountain culture make travelling through QwaQwa a cultural experience as well as a scenic one.
